Technical notes and data

Olympus OM-4T, Tamron 400 mm f/4 SP, Provia 100F.

From a bridge across one of the Refuge ponds.  This is a rehabilitated bird who was injured while migrating through Albuquerque this spring.  Released at Bosque, he chose to stay.

Return

gambrelsquail.jpg (84031 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Tamron 400 mm f/4 SP with Olympus 1.4X-A teleconverter, Provia 100F.

I sent quite a while moving around to try to get a clear shot at this bird.  Fortunately, he was patient.  Exposure spot-metered on his breast, no compensation.

Return

kestrel.jpg (66402 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Tamron 400 mm f/4 SP with Olympus 1.4X-A teleconverter, Provia 100F.

Male American kestrels, or sparrow hawks, are among the most beautifully colored American raptors.  This was one of a pair working from a dead cottonwood.  Kestrels are the smallest falcons and are almost impossible to get close enough to fill the frame, even with a super telephoto

Return

sundish.jpg (30680 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Tamron 400 mm f/4 SP, Provia 100F. f/8.

I had to move fast to set up and frame before the sun rose above the antenna.  Averaged metering.

Return

3dish.jpg (63631 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Tamron 400 mm f/4 SP, Provia 100F. f/8.

Early morning light.

Return

14km.jpg (61707 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Tamron 400 mm f/4 SP with Olympus 1.4X-A, Provia 100F.

One of the three arms of the Very Large Array.  The Observatory is operating in the large aperture configuration; the farthest dish is 14 km from the camera.  This is a  good illustration of the air quality in the New Mexico Rockies.  Later in the day smoke from fires in the Gila Wilderness reduced the visibility to what I am accustomed to in Dallas-Fort Worth in the summertime.

Return

antelope.jpg (60896 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Tamron 400 mm f/4 SP with Olympus 1.4X-A, Provia 100F.

Antelope are plentiful and relatively tame at the VLA.  They did insist on presenting at least one rump each time I shot.

Return

crawler.jpg (55530 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Zuiko 180 mm f/2.8, at f/8, Provia 100F.

Detail of one receiving antenna with the special crawler engine used to pick up, transport, and reposition the dishes.

Return

vla24.jpg (67492 bytes)

vla28.jpg (69296 bytes)

Olympus OM-4T, Zuiko 24 mm f/2.8 and 28 mm f/2.8, at f/8, Provia 100F.

Comparison of these two wide angle lenses.  I'm not sure which composition I like better.  Don't read anything into the color rendition differences - though the exposure settings were identical, the Photoshop levels balancings were not.

Return

vla2.jpg (61640 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Zuiko 24 mm f/2.8, at f/8, Provia 100F.

Another wide angle view, this time seeing the face of the dish.

Return

moth.jpg (73676 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Tamron SP 90 mm f/2.8 Macro, Provia 100F.

Moth, warming up after the cold night by slowly pumping his wings,; I waited for him to pause.

Return

b2hawk.jpg (51564 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Zuiko 180 mm f/2.8, at 1/2000 s, Provia 100F.

Shot from the window of the car; red-tailed hawk doing his impression of a B-2 bomber.

Return

lizard.jpg (105145 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Tamron SP 90 mm f/2.8 Macro, Provia 100F.

Another cooperative New Mexico critter.  The lens front element was about 6 inches from the lizard.

Return

cicada.jpg (73577 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Tamron SP 90 mm f/2.8 Macro, Provia 100F.

Cicadas in New Mexico are particularly loud, but also handsome.  This shot failed the capture the chestnut color on the insect.

Return

elk.jpg (88435 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Tamron 400 mm f/4 SP with Olympus 1.4X-A, wide-open at 1/8 s, Provia 100F.

Unfortunately, the elk did not come out until after sunset.  I feel lucky to have gotten this record shot, as dark as it was.  No time to load faster film.

Return

shadow.jpg (123411 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Tamron SP 90 mm f/2.8 Macro, Provia 100F.

Late in the afternoon, the shadows at White Sands are fascinating.  Exposure spot metered on the plant.

Return

selfportrait.jpg (61203 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Zuiko 50 mm f/1.4 SC, at f/11, Provia 100F

Those footsteps are not as easy to see after sunset when one is trying to retrace the way out of the dunes and back to the car.

Return

dunesparkles.jpg (106402 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Zuiko 50 mm f/1.4 SC, at f/11, Provia 100F

Exposure spot-metered on the shadowed sand.

Return

dunelight.jpg (31865 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Zuiko 50 mm f/1.4 SC, at f/11, Provia 100F

Abstract art with Zuiko.

Return

whitesandssunset.jpg (48251 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Zuiko 180 mm f/2.8, Provia 100F.

Sunset light.

Return

twilight.jpg (29801 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Zuiko 180 mm f/2.8, Provia 100F.

After sunset.

Return

twightlight2.jpg (27498 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Zuiko 180 mm f/2.8, Provia 100F.

Another after sunset shot.

Return

skyscape.jpg (37927 bytes) Olympus OM-4T, Zuiko 50 mm f/1.4 SC, at f/8, Provia 100F.

The final New Mexico trip shot, made outside the Sweet Indulgences Dessert Cafe in Las Cruces.  Highly recommended.  The cafe, that is.
